Highland Tournament Results
By: Taylor Goodwin
Last week, Jan. 2 through 6, Knox County Lady Eagles participated in the Highland Tournament held at Highland High C-1 high school in Ewing, MO. The girls’ first game was Jan. 2 against Macon. Chris Duerr of KHQA News stated that this was an intense and dramatic game for Knox and Macon. Jessica Anderson got the first early bucket of the game putting the Eagles in the lead by three points to get their offense going. One of the team's captains, Angel Harrison, stated that Macon was a pretty big team, and they had the height advantage. Harrison also said that the girls played strong defense, yet had a couple of breakdowns, so it was a pretty matched up game. The game went into overtime, and the Lady Eagles came out on top against Macon 58 to 55.
The game on Jan. 4 against Palmyra, however, didn’t go as planned for the Lady Eagles. Karissa Hamlin started off the game with a steal and a lay-up. One of the team’s captains’ Madison McCabe stated, “The team’s defense was the factor in the loss; we got out-rebounded.” McCabe also stated that it should have been a much closer game. The final score was 38 to 55 which cost the Lady Eagles to play for third place instead of the championship.
On Jan. 6, the Lady Eagles played the hosts of the tournament, the Highland Lady Cougars. Captains’ Karissa Hamlin, Angel Harrison, and Madison McCabe stated that this game was probably the best defense the team has played all year, and that they really came together as a team. They also stated that the first time the team faced Highland they were out rebounded so this time they made sure that rebounding was a main priority. Also, even though Highland came back strong in the second half the team kept their cool and kept the lead.
The Knox County Lady Eagles received third place overall in the Highland Tournament.

Eagles vs. Marion County
Lady Eagles win 64-30 over the Lady Mustangs.
Boys triumphed 76-16 over Marion County.
Being an athlete alone is a great accomplishment, but getting recognized for your hard work and determination makes it that much better. Katie Hamlin, a Sophomore at Knox County High School, was recently recognized for being Kirksville Daily Express player of the year. This past year Hamlin was Knox County’s starting pitcher, someone in the batting lineup that other teams didn't want to face, and a well rounded player on the field. Hamlin’s goal this year was to hit six over the fence home runs, and she successfully accomplished this goal by hitting seven over the fence. She also praised her team for backing her up when she may of been having bad night. Hamlin is looking forward to getting as far as the team did this year, and even further next year.
Lady Eagles defeated Payson Seymour (62-44) and also advance to (3-1).
Eagles wreak Havoc to defeat Liberty (55-28) and advance to a record of 3-1.
The Eagles played the Putnam County Midgets for their second home game for Varsity basketball. The Lady Eagles won 62-43, Madison McCabe led the team with 23 points and Sidney Miller with 12. The boys won 76-48, Noah Talton led with 25 points and Hayden Miller with 16.
Eagles soar above Canton Tigers on Tuesday, November 22. Lady Eagles won 63-43 and boys won 72-52! Lady Eagles now have a record of (1-1), and the boys are (1-0).
Lady Eagles fall to the Monroe City Panthers 57-33.
Middle School Basketball Tournament Results
By: Michael Carlson
On Monday, November 28, the Knox County Middle School boys A basketball team started their journey through the South Shelby Tournament facing off against a tough Holy Rosary group. The game came down to the wire, but the Eagles soared through, winning by a score of 52-50. The boys would then go on to be knocked into the consolation side of the bracket by Monroe City. Although, this wasn't it for this young Eagle team as they bounced back from the loss, winning third place to the Macon Tigers on Saturday, December 3.
The girls team began the tournament a day after the boys on Tuesday, November 29, taking on the Marceline Lady Tigers. Nevertheless, the girls started off strong like the boys, beating their opponent and advancing on. The girls next matchup would be against Macon, who couldn't stop these high soaring Lady Eagles. With the girls winning both games, they had the opportunity to play for first place on Saturday, November 3 against Holy Rosary. The Lady Eagles were not able to overcome this group of girls, but they still took home 2nd place.
The South Shelby Tournament was full of great, young basketball teams who battled it out until the end. These Knox teams came into this with little to no experience against some of these teams and still performed very well and took a ranked place when it was all over.

Knox County Middle School Basketball
By: Michael Carlson
The Knox County Middle School 2016 Basketball Season started officially on October 14, with the first practice taking place. In recent years, the boys and girls roster count hasn't been too high, usually capping off around a dozen kids for each. This season has appeared to be a little different with a surprising total of 24 boys going out. Since there are so many of these seven and eighth grade boys, two teams have been formed so everyone has the chance to play. It has been decided that the older and more experienced players make up the A team while the younger ones form the B team. The girls on the other hand aren't as numbered compared to the boys as they have just 11 going out. Since there are about half of the number of girls when compared to the boys, there is just one girls team.
The first game of the season was against the Canton Tigers on October 25, where all of the three Eagle teams won. The young Knox teams would then go on to beat the Marion County Mustangs, however the B team didn't play. After two wins under the belt, Knox traveled to Clark County and took on the Indians with the boys, both A and B, dominating. However, the girls had a closer game, coming down to a few scores. The young Lady Eagles really showed their endurance and were able to take back home a win. The following game was played against the Highland Cougars where both the girls and boys A team came out on top. Although, the young boy B team faced their first loss this year.
All three of the middle school teams are having a great start to the year. The girls team and boys A team holds a perfect record of 4-0 as the boys B team stands at 2-1. The next game will be at home against our school’s rival, the Scotland County Tigers, on November 9. The boys' teams are coached by Craig Miller and the girls' team is coached by Ashley Johnson.

Football Season Recap
By: Michael Carlson
Knox County started football practice this year on the 1st of August with the South Shelby Jamboree taking place a few weeks later. The Jamboree was where Knox was able to scrimmage against Westran, Paris, and South Shelby before the regular season went underway.
The first official game of the Knox County 2016 football season was held at Schuyler County where the Eagles started off right, taking home a win. Although, the next few games were a challenge as Knox took a loss from both Marceline and Westran. Afterward, the Eagles soared through their schedule knocking off every team they faced, except for their rival, the Scotland County Tigers. The game was close and came down to the wire, but the Tigers were able to outlast on their own home field. Knox continued on, beating Highland and Fayette, capping off the regular season.
The first round of the playoffs came the following week where Knox would face Scotland yet again. Due to the loss against the Tigers during the regular season, Scotland hosted the matchup once more. Both teams came out firing, resulting in a close first half of football. Although, during the second half of play, the Tigers rallied and knocked off the Eagles for a second time this year. That being said, the Knox County 2016 football season came to an end on the Friday night of October 21.
“It was a year of ups and downs, we lost to some teams that we should've beat..” said Knox Head Football Coach VanDelft. “Overall, it was a year of success.” Knox ended the 2016 year with a respectable record of 6-4.
Coach VanDelft also added on the focus for next year. “Every year it’s hard and sometimes seems impossible filling the void that those seniors leave, but every year somebody steps up.” He later went on to say how it's up to the players with past experience to get the younger kids ready to compete at the varsity level. “Next year is more the same.. We have to go out and compete every single week and give our best effort.”

The Knox County Middle School received consolation at the annual Schuyler County Tournament. The Middle School team is coached by Stacey Bared and Ashley Johnson. The team of eleven girls only had 9 players able to attend the tournament. They faced the Macon Tigers the first game of the tournament. The Lady Eagles came out very strong in the first inning and led the game 2-1. They were able to hold the lead until the third inning. The Macon Tigers scored six runs, and the Lady Eagles earned four more runs. However, that was not enough to get the win, and the final score was 9-4. This loss caused Knox to enter the losing side of the bracket.
The Lady Eagles faced Milan in the next game. Kinsley Johnson and Riley Strange both had an RBI single, and Alyssa Peavler had a ground-out putting the score to 3-0 in the first inning. Johnson had a 3-run home run in the second inning. Milan was able to score one run in the fourth inning. The final score was 7-1 sending the Lady Eagles into the consolation game to play against Brookfield.
In the first inning of the consolation game, Knox had runners on all three bases, and Kaitlyn Campbell hit an RBI putting them on top 1-0. The Lady Eagles had a big second inning scoring five runs. Brookfield battled back in this inning putting the score 5-4, Lady Eagles with the lead. Johnston started a rally by hitting a two-run home run. Then a steal at home by Strange, an RBI by Kylie Woods, and a triple by Walker soon followed.
“I was very proud of the girls for picking themselves up after a tough loss and coming together as a team to make it to the consolation game,” said Coach Baird.

Every year Knox County High School loses amazing seniors that put their hearts into the sports they play and into their education to succeed in life. On Thursday, Sept. 29, the Knox County Lady Eagles played their last home game against the Highland Cougars. Before the game the team and their family put together a night to remember for our two senior softball players, Madison McCabe and Lindsey Hubble, and for the senior softball DJ, Jacobi Miller. With balloons and happy tears the seniors were surprised with gifts and a great turnout of people to celebrate their high school softball career. The team came out with an amazing win, winning their last home game 3-1.

Homecoming Recap
By: Jacobi Miller
This year’s homecoming theme was “Eagles Got Game”. Every year for Homecoming, each grade participates in a series of competitions throughout the week, and the winning class receives a prize after all the points are added up. This year the prize is a pizza party. The way the classes can earn points are from the dress-up days, banner and float competitions. The classes can get points from how many kids in your grade dress up throughout the week based off of percentage. With the banner and float, classes must come up with ideas that go along with the Homecoming theme, and make a float and banner that match. Results were as follows:
Banner

2nd place- Juniors
3rd place- Seniors
4th place-Sophomores

This year instead of a dance after the Homecoming game, Student Council hosted a game night. There were board games in the health room, music played for people to dance if they wanted, volleyball in the elementary gym, and StuCo purchased pizza and subs for kids to enjoy. This year, the softball girls played a makeup game against Salisbury before the football game, and they won 3-2. The football boys beat Salisbury 40-7 for a victorious homecoming.

Changing Conferences
By: Angel Harrison
This year Knox County's athletic programs have moved to the Lewis and Clark Conference. Our school board has talked about changing conferences for a while, and when we recieved the invitation we accepted it. The teams in this conference include Westran, Salisbury, Fayette, Harrisburg, Marceline, Slater and Paris.
Coach Alex VanDelft is the boy's varsity football head coach at Knox County. They changed to the Lewis and Clark conference this year, along with all other sports teams. VanDelft believes this is a positive change because there are bigger teams in this conference. VanDelft says that they will play the top 10 teams in the state, and that will help his players get prepared for district rounds and play-offs.
The two different teams that our football team will face are Salisbury and Westran, but they have yet to play them this season. VanDelft’s goals for this season are to keep improving every day. The varsity team has lost around seven starters from last year, so his team is younger this year than in the past. VanDelft states, “This season is going well so far. We started off slow playing some tough teams, but we have learned a lot and seem to be on the right track.”
Coach Zach Summers is the head coach boy's varsity basketball team. He is excited for his team and has a positive outlook on changing conferences. Summers is looking forward to his team playing closer to the Columbia area because there will be more media coverage, his boys will be more known giving them a better chance for an All-State selection, and they boys will be more known throughout Missouri. The boys varsity team will still participate in the Unity Tournament in Il. and The Highland Tournament. They will also be attending the Tony Lenzini Tournament in Palmyra, Mo for the first time this year.
The new teams they will play this upcoming season include Westran, Salisbury, Harrisburg, Marceline, and Fayette.
The Knox County boys varsity team traveled to Monroe City shootout this past summer and defeated Harrisburg. Harrisburg is considered one of the best teams in the conference. Coach Summers’s goals for this upcoming season are to win the District and Conference Championships.
Coach Keith Gudehus is the girl's varsity head coach. He thinks changing conferences is a great move. “We’re going to face a higher level of competition across the board, with a chance to play in some in some really nice facilities. I think we’ll be very competitive. I’m really looking forward to it,” said Gudehus.
Gudehus’s team is participating in the Unity Tournament, Highland Tournament, and the Macon Tournament this upcoming season. This is the first year they will be playing in the Macon Tournament. The new teams that The Knox County girls will be playing are Westran, Salisbury, Fayette, Paris, and Illini West. Gudehus believes that playing in the bigger conference against bigger schools will provide more media for his team.
Gudehus’s goals for this upcoming season are to win a Championship. His team has had a lot of success the last two years and have received second place finishes, but he wants to do better than that this year. Coach Gudehus wants to send his seniors off with a good, winning season.
